The overlooked physical nature of signage

Chapter 4: Cognitive advantages (aka no other theory is as powerful)

Most elevators go up and down, not right and left. Some elevators go right and left (Yes, some do. In some Alpine resorts the buildings are long snake-like low rises and deplacements are on the horizontal plane). But no elevator goes down or left.

Accidents happen. The signage system is a part of the physical world, and as such is subject to the same laws that govern the physical world (plus some specific laws that govern interpretation and relevance.) Signs have a content and a vehicle, and the vehicle is just an object like any other object. And like any other object it can be broken, twisted, erased. (Erased is an interesting category, somewhat in between vehicle and content: it can be applied to both.)

Accidents happen, and there will be consequences. You can dismiss with a smile the left-handed elevator, but you have to make a choice when you cross the street. Quick: Go or no go?
